Kozushima launches website to promote the island's appeal

Tourism to Kozushima is centered around summer marine leisure activities. On the other hand, tapping into tourism demand during the off-season from fall through spring has been a challenge. As a measure to generate demand during the off-season, members of Kozushima's meeting have been preparing to launch a platform (an English-language website) that provides viewers with information about the island's attractions and encourages them to visit the island, targeting foreign nationals living in Japan who are interested in the history and lifestyle of rural Japan. This website was finally launched on March 29, 2021.

The website, which members have been working on for about one year, is packed with a variety of ideas and creative solutions. One of the most important ideas at the heart of the website's concept was to draw visitors to Kozushima during the off-season through detailed descriptions of Kozushima's essence and attractions other than the blue ocean and marine leisure activities. To convey this aspect of the island to foreign nationals who are interested in the profound experiences that Japan's rural areas have to offer, they included in the website a wealth of in-depth information that cannot be understood by simply looking at the island, such as information about the island's origins, its beautiful nature and the environment surrounding the island, its myths and other aspects of its unique history and culture, traditions, and the characteristics of the island's fishing industry.

Members were also mindful to make the access and transportation methods easy to understand, so that foreign nationals unfamiliar with Japanese geography could get to the island smoothly and tour the island without stress--after all, even if people were to become interested in Kozushima, the opportunity for them to visit would be lost if they did not understand how to get there. And even if they were to arrive on the island, they would not be able to fully enjoy the island's charms without an understanding of transportation methods and routes to tour spots on the island.

Kozushima residents and foreign national creators produced the website while touring the island together and refining the content to better convey the island's appeal to foreign nationals. The result--a website can be called an "English-language encyclopedia and textbook of life of Kozushima," because it covers the region at a level of depth on par with any other destination across Japan.

Their desire to highlight the island's appeal is also reflected in the website's layout and navigation. For example, the walking courses not only provide a general introduction of each attraction, but also include information such as where on the island the course is located and the distance each covers. Members created this content over the course of several meetings, during which they worked out how to "make the website easy to use while on the move, so that visitors can view it on their smartphone as well as on the computer" and how to "categorize and present information in a hierarchy according to foreign visitors' needs, so that they can quickly reach the information they want."

Members also added sections to the website that introduce places to stay, eat and drink, and shop on the island. They hope that foreign national visitors will make use of the site during their stay on Kozushima and that it will help them to directly experience the lifestyle of the island at various stores. Going forward, they will announce the website's launch to people across the island and work to further expand the information it provides by widely inviting stores to cooperate in creating site content.
