Samples of the Oga Log, a traveler's notebook for island visitors, are complete! Crowdfunding is under consideration

The Ogasawara Islands, including Chichijima, received a new surge of interest as a tourist destination when the islands were listed as a World Natural Heritage site in 2011. As more and more people visit Chichijima, protection of its natural environment is becoming increasingly important.

During the FY2019 Tokyo Treasure Islands Project, members of Chichijima's meeting thought about developing an environmental conservation program that would teach participants about ecosystems and sustainable societies through efforts to conserve and restore the natural environment, as well as producing a "Traveler's Notebook." However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was determined that development of the environmental conservation program would be too difficult given the circumstances, and the project was put on hold. Instead, meeting members created opportunities to rethink the current situation of the island and tourism.

Due to the above, Chichijima is pursuing two activities in FY2020: the production of a "Traveler's Notebook" for visitors to the island and the holding of the Chichijima Mirai Conference as an occasion to think about Chichijima's future.

The "Traveler's Notebook" for visitors to the island is intended to be used as a tool to deepen sightseeing visitors' understanding of Chichijima's attractions and resources and as a springboard for communication between island residents and visitors. Using the notebook in this way is envisioned to create fans who relate to the island's environment and the sentiments of island residents.

After the original idea was proposed in FY2019, members further discussed details regarding the concept, practical usage, and design of the notebook.
They decided to name the notebook the "Ogasawara Traveler's Log," or "Oga Log" for short, in the hope that people who love the Ogasawara Islands would want to keep a record of their travels.

Opinions were exchanged on how elements "unique to Chichijima" could be incorporated into the production of the Oga Log.

As a result, it was decided that a part of the notebook would be made of recycled paper containing chips from trees grown on the island, and that the logo imprinted on the cover of the notebook would be based on the motif of a whale and the Mandarina luhuana, a species endemic to Ogasawara.

The Mandarina luhuana is a species of terrestrial mollusk, a relative of the land snail, that is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands. It is said to have gone extinct sometime between 1,000 and 2,000 years ago. Although today its shells are only found in a semi-fossilized state, they are known to be valuable evidence of the evolutionary process. For the people of Chichijima, they are symbolic creatures.

Since one of the aims of the Oga Log is to increase opportunities for interaction with island residents and improve visitor satisfaction, members are also considering how the notebooks can be utilized on the island. For example, special benefits could be offered to those who bring the notebook with them to the island.

Samples of the notebooks were completed in September. Using these samples, participating members are working to make improvements to the product before it goes on sale.

After production of the samples, the concrete path toward completion of the Oga Log has started to come into view.
Next, members are considering tackling crowdfunding as a method for promoting and selling the Oga Log.
It is hoped that crowdfunding will not only serve to tell the story of the Oga Log, but also bring in various feedback from the supporters and lead to further development of the product.
